Located in Plenty and supporting women across South Morang, Diamond Creek, Doreen, Greensborough, Eltham, and surrounding areas, our practice tailors every treatment to your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, movement patterns, and individual needs.
Hip pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints experienced during pregnancy. As your baby grows, changes in posture, weight distribution, pelvic positioning, and movement patterns can place increased stress on the hips, pelvis, lower back, and surrounding muscles. Hormonal changes that prepare the body for birth can also affect joint stability and alter how forces are transferred through the pelvis and hips.
Many women experience discomfort when walking, standing for extended periods, rolling over in bed, climbing stairs, exercising, or getting in and out of the car. Pregnancy-related hip pain may be felt on one or both sides and can range from a mild ache to persistent discomfort that impacts daily activities and sleep quality.
Our pregnancy massage and myotherapy treatments focus on reducing muscle tension, improving movement, supporting pelvic and hip function, and helping you stay as comfortable and active as possible throughout your pregnancy.
Whether you are experiencing pelvic girdle pain, lower back pain, hip pain, round ligament pain, rib discomfort, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, or general pregnancy-related aches and stiffness, treatment is designed to address the muscular and movement-related factors contributing to your symptoms while helping you feel more comfortable and supported throughout pregnancy.

What Is Pregnancy-Related Hip Pain?
Pregnancy-related hip pain is a common condition that affects many women throughout pregnancy. As your body adapts to support your growing baby, changes in posture, weight distribution, pelvic positioning, movement patterns, and muscle function can place increased stress on the hips and surrounding structures.
Hip pain may develop gradually as pregnancy progresses or become more noticeable during everyday activities such as walking, standing, exercising, climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, or rolling over in bed. For some women, symptoms may be mild and occasional, while others experience persistent discomfort that impacts daily activities and sleep quality.
Pregnancy-related hip pain may feel like:
Aching or discomfort in one or both hips
Pain when walking or standing for extended periods
Difficulty rolling over in bed
Pain when climbing stairs
Discomfort when getting in and out of the car
Tightness through the hips, glutes, or outer thighs
Pain around the pelvis or sacroiliac joints
Reduced hip mobility or stiffness
Discomfort during exercise or daily movement
Pain that radiates into the buttocks or upper legs
The physical and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can affect how forces are transferred through the pelvis, hips, lower back, and surrounding muscles. These changes may contribute to increased muscle tension, altered movement patterns, joint sensitivity, and reduced comfort with everyday activities.
At Birthing Body AU, we commonly support women experiencing pregnancy-related hip pain associated with muscular tension, pelvic changes, movement restrictions, and the physical demands of pregnancy. Treatment is tailored to reduce discomfort, improve mobility, support hip and pelvic function, and help you feel more comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
Common Causes of Hip Pain
-
Changes in Pelvic Alignment
As pregnancy progresses, the pelvis naturally adapts to accommodate your growing baby and prepare for birth. These changes can alter how forces are transferred through the hips, pelvis, and lower back, sometimes contributing to discomfort, stiffness, or feelings of instability.
-
Increased Load Through the Hips and Pelvis
As your baby grows, the hips and pelvis are required to support increasing weight and physical demands. This additional load can place greater stress on the joints, muscles, and connective tissues surrounding the hips, leading to soreness, fatigue, and discomfort with daily activities.
-
Sleeping Position Discomfort
Many women notice hip pain becomes more pronounced at night. Side sleeping, prolonged pressure on one hip, and difficulty changing positions can contribute to irritation of the muscles and tissues around the hips, often leading to disrupted sleep and morning stiffness.
-
Gluteal Muscle Tension
The gluteal muscles play an important role in supporting the pelvis and controlling movement during pregnancy. As posture and movement patterns change, these muscles can become overworked, tight, or sensitive, contributing to pain in the buttocks, outer hips, and upper thighs.
-
Reduced Hip Mobility
Changes in activity levels, muscle tension, and movement patterns may reduce hip mobility during pregnancy. Restricted movement through the hip joints can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and difficulty performing everyday activities such as walking, squatting, or getting up from the floor.
-
Pelvic Girdle Pain
Pelvic girdle pain is a common pregnancy-related condition that affects the joints and structures around the pelvis. Many women experiencing pelvic girdle pain also report discomfort around the hips, particularly during walking, standing on one leg, climbing stairs, or rolling over in bed.
-
Changes in Walking Patterns
As your centre of gravity shifts throughout pregnancy, the way you walk and move naturally changes. These altered movement patterns can increase the workload placed on the hips and surrounding muscles, sometimes contributing to discomfort, muscle fatigue, and reduced movement efficiency.
-
Previous Hip or Lower Back Injuries
Women with a history of hip pain, pelvic pain, lower back pain, or previous musculoskeletal injuries may be more likely to experience symptoms during pregnancy. Existing movement restrictions or areas of sensitivity can sometimes become more noticeable as physical demands increase
-
Increased Physical Demands During Pregnancy
Pregnancy places unique demands on the body. Caring for other children, work requirements, exercise, household tasks, prolonged standing, and reduced sleep can all influence how the body copes with the physical changes of pregnancy. These factors may contribute to increased muscle tension, fatigue, and hip discomfort.
How Myotherapy & Massage Can Help Pregnancy Hip Pain
Myotherapy and pregnancy massage can help relieve pregnancy-related hip pain by reducing muscle tension, improving mobility, and supporting the muscles and joints as they adapt to the physical demands of pregnancy.
Hip pain during pregnancy is often influenced by changes in posture, weight distribution, pelvic positioning, movement patterns, sleeping positions, muscle tension, and the increasing load placed on the hips and pelvis as your baby grows. Treatment focuses on addressing these contributing factors while helping you move and feel more comfortably throughout pregnancy.

Hannah Lynch
Myotherapist & Founder
Hi, I’m Hannah — a women’s health Myotherapist, remedial massage therapist, mum of two, and the founder of Birthing Body AU. I’m deeply passionate about supporting women through Pregnancy Massage, Pregnancy Myotherapy, birth preparation, C-Section Scar Therapy, postpartum recovery, and women’s health care at every stage of life.
My own journey into motherhood changed everything. It gave me a much deeper understanding of how much women carry physically, mentally, and emotionally — especially while navigating pregnancy, recovery, parenting, work, and the ongoing demands of everyday life. I experienced firsthand how often women are expected to simply “push through” discomfort, tension, exhaustion, Back Pain, Pelvic Girdle Pain, and the constant changes happening within their bodies.
But I believe you deserve more than just coping.
That’s why my work is centred on creating a calm, supportive space where you feel heard, cared for, and understood. Whether you’re seeking support for Pregnancy Pelvic Pain, Sciatica Pain, muscle tension, postural strain, birth recovery, or general movement and wellbeing, every treatment is tailored to your body, your symptoms, and what you need support with on the day.
Using a combination of myotherapy, remedial massage, soft tissue therapy, pregnancy massage, and movement-focused care, my goal is to help reduce pain, improve movement, and support you in feeling more comfortable and connected to your body again.
At Birthing Body AU, care is about more than simply treating symptoms — it’s about supporting women through pregnancy, postpartum, recovery, movement, and everyday life with a gentle, evidence-informed, and holistic approach.

-
Many women notice increased hip discomfort when sleeping. Side sleeping, prolonged pressure on one hip, reduced movement overnight, and difficulty changing positions can contribute to increased stiffness and irritation around the hips and pelvis.

If hip pain is affecting your sleep, daily activities, mobility, exercise, or overall comfort, seeking assessment and treatment may help identify contributing factors and provide strategies to better manage your symptoms throughout pregnancy.
